Battle Arena Layout
The river, bridges and towers of every battle.
via Wikipedia: Gen.G · see source
A river splits the arena into two sections, with bridges creating left and right lanes for offensive focus.[1] The objective is to destroy the opponent's towers while protecting your own in one-on-one matches.[2]
Geography and history
Clash Royale was one of the first player-versus-player real-time games for mobile.[3] Supercell, the Finnish developer of Clash of Clans, Hay Day, and Boom Beach, created Clash Royale.[4] An abandoned prototype called The Summoners, which predated Clash of Clans, provided the initial concept; work on it resumed in 2014.[4] Originally called Wizard Arena with an original fantasy setting, Supercell later placed the game within the Clash of Clans universe.[5]
A worldwide release for both platforms happened on March 2, 2016.[6]
What the cited sources add
Hodapp noted that players select eight unique cards to build a deck from a few dozen cards.[7] Grannell also noted that the chest timer system stopped him from playing 24/7 and resulted in dipping in and out every few hours.[8] Isa Muhammad reported that the Merge Tactics mode added in July 2025 consists of four-player turn-based battles accessible starting at Arena 3.[9] TouchArcade's reviewer described the game as a collectable card game where cards represent real-time strategy units placed on MOBA-like multi-lane battlefields featuring two towers and a base.[7]
Game Informer's reviewer characterized the gameplay as "fun, fast" and so compelling that a brief session could easily stretch to consume an hour.[10][11] Stuff's reviewer noted that two lanes run between the opposing sides, and players dispatch battle units along these lanes to destroy towers.[8]
