Asunción is the capital and largest city of Paraguay, situated on the eastern bank of the Paraguay River, just northeast of its confluence with the Pilcomayo River. The river separates the city from Paraguay’s Occidental Region to the northwest and from Argentina to the southwest, while the eastern part is surrounded by the Central Department. As one of the oldest cities in South America, it is the longest continually inhabited settlement in the Río de la Plata Basin, earning the nickname “the Mother of Cities.” From here, Spanish colonial expeditions set out to found other settlements, including the second foundation of Buenos Aires and more than sixty-five other cities such as Villarrica, Corrientes, Santa Fe, Córdoba, and Santa Cruz de la Sierra. According to the 2022 census, the city proper has 462,241 inhabitants, while its metropolitan area, Greater Asunción, exceeds 2.3 million people and generates 70% of the national GDP. Administratively, Asunción is an autonomous capital district, not part of any department. The metropolitan area includes cities like San Lorenzo, Fernando de la Mora, Lambaré, Luque, and others from the Central Department. Asunción houses the three branches of government—executive, legislative, and judicial—and serves as the nation’s cultural, banking, economic, diplomatic, and industrial center. It is the seat of the Permanent Review Court of Mercosur and will host the 2031 Pan American Games.
