Charlie Hustle, baseball's career hits leader.

Peter Edward Rose Sr. (1941-2024), born in Cincinnati, played in the majors from 1963 to 1986, mostly for the Big Red Machine Reds, and managed the club from 1984 to 1989. He also played for Philadelphia, winning a third title in 1980, and briefly for Montreal.

A switch hitter, he holds the career records for hits (4,256), games (3,562), at-bats (14,053), singles (3,215) and outs (10,328). His honours include three batting titles, an MVP, Rookie of the Year, two Gold Gloves as an outfielder (1969, 1970) and 17 All-Star selections at five different positions. His 44-game hit streak is third-longest ever. In August 1989 he was declared permanently ineligible over betting on baseball, including on the Reds, which he denied until admitting it in 2004; a 1991 Hall of Fame vote barred ineligible players. He was reinstated after his death, in 2025, making him eligible for the Hall.
