The Love of Hypnosis

A 2018-produced Chinese series based on a manhua about emotional healing.

The Love of Hypnosis

The Love of Hypnosis (Chinese: 南烟斋笔录; pinyin: Nán Yānzhāi Bǐlù; lit. 'Southern Mist House Records') is an unreleased Chinese television series produced in 2018, adapted from the manhua of the same name by Ke Xiaosha. The cast is led by Liu Yifei and Jing Boran. The plot opens with a white-collar worker uncovering old records in her childhood home, which shifts the narrative to the late Qing and early Republican era. The female lead possesses a unique ability and a specific purpose: she helps men and women resolve their emotional struggles, leaving them without regrets regardless of the outcome, though her own romantic life is fraught with difficulties.

The series was directed by a team of four: Liu Haibo (Chinese Style Relationship), Zhang Silin (Precious Youth), Yip Chiu-yee (Looking Back in Anger), and Wu Jiuxi (Sunny Piggy). Wu Jiuxi, a frequent collaborator of Tsui Hark, also wrote the screenplay. Principal photography began on November 28, 2017, at Hengdian World Studios and concluded on June 15, 2018. The main set, "Nanyan Studio," spans 12,000 square meters (with 3,500 square meters of floor area) and took three months to construct from scratch. Wang Gang (Ordinary World) served as art director. Reports indicate the sets will remain intact at Hengdian Studio after filming. Costumes were designed by William Chang. This production marks Liu Yifei's return to television after a twelve-year hiatus.
