Ciqikou, Chongqing

Ciqikou was first built during the reign of Emperor Zhenzong of Song (r. 998–1004). It gained prominence during the Ming dynasty as a commercial port and market town, reaching its climax at the end of the Qing dynasty. The town's name traces back to porcelain production during the Ming and Qing dynasties. An old Chinese proverb says: 'One flagstone road, and one thousand years' Ciqikou.'

Ciqikou's significance lies in its preservation of old Chongqing's character before the city became a vast urban agglomeration. Its steep pedestrian streets, lined with shops selling porcelain and handicrafts, and its tea houses and restaurants, offer a glimpse into the past. The town is the source of Baci culture and hosted many well-known figures during the Second Sino-Japanese War, including writers and artists such as Guo Moruo, Xu Beihong, and Ba Jin. Notable landmarks include the Compound of Zhong's, built by a eunuch of Empress Dowager Cixi; the Bao Lun Buddhist Temple, where the Jianwen Emperor of the Ming dynasty spent his exile; and the Han Lin Academy, which produced several scholars recognized in Qing dynasty examinations. The town's customs, such as temple fairs, dragon dances, and teahouse culture, persist today. Local food specialties include the 'three treasures of Ciqikou': Jiaoyan Peanut, Maoxuewang, and Qianzhangpi, as well as Douban fish.
