Regular season
The White Sox were busy at the end of July. On the 29th, they sent pitcher Michael Kopech to the Dodgers and pitcher Erick Fedde and outfielder Tommy Pham to the Cardinals in a three-team swap. In return, they got third baseman Miguel Vargas, infielders Alexander Albertus and Jeral Pérez, and a future player from Los Angeles. The next day, they dealt outfielder Eloy Jiménez and cash to the Orioles for lefty Trey McGough. They also traded left-hander Tanner Banks to the Phillies for infielder William Bergolla, and infielder Paul DeJong to the Royals for right-hander Jarold Rosado.
Loss number 121
On September 22, the White Sox lost 4–2 to the San Diego Padres, earning their 120th loss, surpassing the American League record set by the 2003 Detroit Tigers and tying the Major League record set by the 1962 expansion New York Mets. Following the game, many White Sox fans bought tickets to home games against the Los Angeles Angels, hoping to witness the team break the modern single-season loss record. During those games, fans mixed cheers and boos when the team played well, and yelled phrases such as 'Sell the team!' when mistakes occurred.
The White Sox won all three home games against the Angels, keeping their record at 120 losses, and fans booed the team. Outfielder Andrew Benintendi acknowledged the reaction, saying, 'People here tonight were trying to see history. They're going to have to wait one more day. Maybe.'
Fans held signs referencing the potential 121st loss, including one bearing '121' in the White Sox logo font. The White Sox swept the Angels, winning their final home game 7–0 to a standing ovation. Interim manager Grady Sizemore stated before facing the Detroit Tigers that the players were professionals who would not be shaken by the record and wanted to spoil the Tigers' playoff hopes. On September 27, the game was scoreless through four innings.
In the bottom of the fifth, Jake Rogers scored from third on a wild pitch by Jared Shuster, and Matt Vierling hit a sacrifice fly to score Parker Meadows, putting Detroit up 2–0.
