2000 Chicago White Sox season

95 wins, the best record in the American League and the AL Central title.

The 2000 Chicago White Sox, in the club's 101st season, finished 95–67 and won the American League Central by five games over the second-place Cleveland Indians. It was their first postseason berth since 1993, and their 95 wins were the best record in the American League, the sixth time the franchise had led the league and the first since 1983. The season ended quickly: the Seattle Mariners swept the White Sox in three games in the 2000 American League Division Series.

Background

The Opening Day lineup was Ray Durham, José Valentín, Frank Thomas, Magglio Ordóñez, Paul Konerko, Chris Singleton, Carlos Lee, Craig Wilson and Mark Johnson, with Mike Sirotka pitching. On April 22 a 14–6 win over the Detroit Tigers at Comiskey Park produced two bench-clearing brawls, both set off by hit batters; among the eleven ejections were Tanyon Sturtze, Bob Howry, Magglio Ordóñez, Bill Simas, manager Jerry Manuel and bench coach Joe Nossek. Five days later Major League Baseball handed out the harshest brawl penalties in its history, suspending sixteen members of the two clubs for a combined 82 games, with Tigers coach Juan Samuel getting the longest ban at fifteen and managers Manuel and Phil Garner eight apiece.
