David Perry Hazeltine (born October 27, 1958) is an American jazz pianist, composer, arranger, and educator. He began studying piano at age nine and first performed professionally at thirteen. After attending the Wisconsin College Conservatory of Music from 1976 to 1979, he worked around Chicago, Minneapolis, and Milwaukee, becoming the regular pianist for the Milwaukee Jazz Gallery.

On the advice of Chet Baker, he moved to New York City in 1981, though domestic considerations prompted a return to Milwaukee after two years. He earned a BA from the University of Wisconsin in 1991, chaired the jazz department at the Wisconsin College Conservatory of Music from 1985 to 1992, and returned to New York in 1992. His first solo album, Four Flights Up, appeared in 1995.

Background

Hazeltine's early career was shaped by a pivotal encounter with Chet Baker at the Milwaukee Jazz Gallery, where Hazeltine was the regular pianist. After performing together, Baker urged him to move to New York City, which he did in 1981. But after two years, 'domestic considerations prompted a return to his home town.' Back in Milwaukee, Hazeltine returned to the Wisconsin College Conservatory of Music and served as chairman of the jazz department from 1985 to 1992.

In 1992, he made a second move to New York. There, he led a trio with Peter Washington on bass and Louis Hayes on drums, and worked with the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, Slide Hampton's big band, and the group One for All. His first solo album, Four Flights Up, came out in 1995. Though a pianist, Hazeltine has stated he feels more influenced by saxophonists, particularly Charlie Parker, and has said composing does not come easily to him.
