The franchise moved from Charlotte to New Orleans in 2002 and made its playoff debut in 2003. In 2014, the Charlotte Bobcats rebranded as the Charlotte Hornets and reclaimed the history of the original Charlotte Hornets (1988–2002), while the New Orleans Pelicans (formerly the New Orleans Hornets) retained their own franchise records from 2002 onward—they were not retroactively considered an expansion team. In the pre-2014 timeline, the Hornets made the playoffs for a fourth consecutive season.
