Episode summaries
In "The Tale of the Turbot", five years after her divorce, Bridget lives in a small flat purchased by her ex-husband Mark and tries to improve her life through adult education classes, including pottery. At her local clergyman's request, she attends services at a predominantly Black parish in Croydon, where young pastor Daniel unsettles her by treating her as an intruder. She leaves with a Bible borrowed from a congregant. Mark's mother Frieda, who detests Rebecca and tries to sabotage Mark's marriage, is left alone when Mark and Rebecca holiday in France. Upon their return, they find Bridget has moved back into the house she once shared with Mark and intends to stay. In "Home Fires", Mark seeks someone to convince Bridget to leave, while Bridget and Rebecca begin bonding. Bridget and Mark's daughter Phyllida sees a photo of Daniel in the church newsletter tucked into the Bible and, attracted to his looks, returns it to him. Daniel initially resists her flirting but becomes attracted to her, conflicted because his community would likely disapprove of a relationship with a white woman. "Seize the Day" finds Phyllida sharing a flat with bisexual Giles, straight Jonathan, and Serafina, a teacher near a nervous breakdown. When Giles' crotchety grandfather Herbert is left on their doorstep, Phyllida moves in with her father and his wife to escape overcrowding. Bridget then takes Phyllida's place in the Battersea flat, enjoying her role as caretaker. The final episode, "The Horse May Talk", was broadcast on 13 March 1989.
