Reception
Critics were largely impressed with the series. Ben Dowell of The Times gave it a perfect five-star rating, calling the show "spellbinding" and lauding Hawes' performance as "exceptional." Vicky Jessop at Metro awarded four stars, hailing the "unusual love story" as one of the best surprises of 2026. Cosmopolitan deemed it a "must-watch" and Hawes' finest work since Bodyguard. The Telegraph praised Jack Thorne's script as "characteristically elegant" and Hawes' acting as "divine." The Financial Times also commended the writing for its "refreshing maturity," describing the series as "quietly powerful" yet "old-fashioned and wordy," giving it three stars. Radio Times' Gabriel Tate called the show "thoughtful, warm, witty, complex" and full of the intimate conversations Thorne is known for, awarding four stars. Not all reviews were glowing. Lucy Mangan of The Guardian gave just two stars, calling it "a swing and a miss" despite the talented cast. Jayne Manfredi of the Church Times was similarly tepid, noting the drama was "beautifully-shot" but offered only "surface-level observation" of its themes.
