History

The first structure on this site was likely a wooden fort and tower from the 1100s. A century later, the first lords of Erpeldange, Frederic and Gerard, raised a stone castle to watch over the valley where the Sûre and Alzette rivers meet. Ownership then moved to the Counts of Vianden, followed by the Brandenburg-Outscheid and von Moestroff-Kerpen families.

The Gondersdorf family gained the castle through marriage and, in 1630, turned it into a lavish home for their daughter. By the time Charles François baron de Failly de Sancy and Marie Marguerite de Giraldin inherited it in 1677, the fortifications had been replaced by a peaceful park. The Prel family left it empty in the 1800s, after which it became a rectory.

During World War II, both German and American troops occupied it, causing damage. The state bought the castle in 1983, and since 1987 it has held the local commune's administrative offices. Two fine Renaissance fireplaces remain inside.
