History
Walter de Meysembourg was proprietor in 1176, and Eberhart de Maysembourg in 1296. The castle was destroyed by Philip the Good in 1443 but rebuilt before 1500. It was again destroyed by Maréchal de Boufflers' troops in 1683–84; only the chapel, moat, and part of the outer wall remain from the earlier structure.
Custine de Wiltz, the last heir, fled during the French invasion in 1794. After a public auction in 1798, the castle passed through several owners. The Prince of Arenberg bought the property in 1855, demolished the old castle in 1880, and built a new one in Neo-Renaissance style.
Restoration work was carried out by state architect Charles Arendt in 1971. Alphonse Spiegelburg purchased it in 1974, and further restoration funded by the State occurred from 2014 to 2016. The castle and grounds are now owned by the Clasen family.
