Lore & Background

The season uses four pieces of theme music: two opening themes and two closing themes. The first opening theme is "Giri Giri Chop" by B'z from episode 167 to 168, while episode 166 used the previous opening "Truth (A Great Detective of Love)" by Two-Mix. The second opening is "Mysterious Eyes" by Garnet Crow for the rest of the season. The first ending theme is "Free Magic" by WAG from episode 167 to 179, while episode 166 used the previous ending "Step by Step" by Ziggy. The second ending is "Secret of My Heart" by Mai Kuraki.

Episodes one to twenty-eight were later collected into nine DVD compilations by Shogakukan, released between March 25, 2001 and January 15, 2002 in Japan. As of the cutoff date, no official English dub (Funimation/Crunchyroll releases) exists for episodes 176–178 or episodes 170–171.

The Double Life at the Heart of the Story

The series centers on Jimmy Kudo, a high school detective who solves difficult cases for the police. During one investigation, a member of the Black Organization attacks him and forces an experimental poison down his throat. A rare side-effect shrinks him to the body of a young child. To protect his identity, he assumes the alias Conan Edogawa and pretends to be a genuine child, all while secretly cracking cases and hunting for clues about the organization. His childhood friend Rachel Moore and her father Richard, who runs a detective agency, become his cover. He loves Rachel but cannot confess his feelings or reveal who he truly is, fearing it would put her in danger. This tension between his desire to be close to her and his need to stay hidden drives much of the narrative. He also befriends a small circle who know his secret: Dr. Agasa, who builds him spy gadgets; Harley Hartwell, a fellow high school detective from Osaka; and Anita Hailey, the original developer of the poison that shrank both him and her.

Rachel Moore – The Author's Ideal

Gosho Aoyama has spoken about conceiving Rachel Moore as the kind of girl Jimmy could dream of: a responsible student, a top athlete, a good cook, kindhearted, and deeply loyal. He admitted he had never drawn a girl like her before and wanted to create someone strong in every way. Because kendo, karate, and judo were the only martial arts he knew how to illustrate, and he had already used kendo in his earlier series Yaiba, he chose karate for Rachel, calling it "cooler." Her Japanese name, Ran Mori, is derived from Maurice Leblanc, the creator of the fictional thief Arsene Lupin. In the story, Rachel is a regional karate champion and team captain, yet she is terrified of horror films. She is compassionate to a fault, assisting even potential criminals, and her kindness once motivated the character Vermouth to keep Jimmy's identity hidden from the Black Organization. She opposes killing anyone, insisting criminals should face trial. The Junior Detective League looks up to her as a role model. Despite suspecting Conan Edogawa is Jimmy throughout the series, he consistently tricks her into doubting her own instincts.

Richard Moore and the Sleeping Detective Gimmick

Richard Moore, Rachel's father, is a private detective whose public fame rests almost entirely on a ruse: Conan frequently sedates him and then impersonates his voice to solve cases. Because he appears drowsy or asleep during these deductions, the public dubs him "Sleeping Moore." Before his private practice, Richard served as a police officer under Inspector Meguire. He is married to Eva Kaden, a successful lawyer and his childhood friend, though the two have been separated for over a decade due to constant arguments. Despite his irresponsible habits of drinking, gambling, and flirting with young women, he cares deeply for his daughter and occasionally displays a strong sense of honor and strict ethics. He is skilled in judo. Aoyama revealed he did not spend much time designing Richard, expecting the series to be short, and initially drew a thinner version of Captain Nakamori from his earlier manga Magic Kaito. After being told the two looked too similar, he gave Richard a pompadour and altered the mustache.

A Patchwork of English-Language Releases

The English-language landscape for Case Closed is notably fragmented. Viz Media licenses the manga, while the anime has passed through multiple dubbing and distribution hands: Funimation handled the first English dub, followed by the Macias Group dubbing released on Tubi, and more recently Studio Nano produced a curated dub of select episodes for Crunchyroll and Netflix. Funimation and Viz both Americanized many character names, and the two companies sometimes used different names or spellings for the same characters. Other English releases take a different approach: the manga published in Singapore by Shogakukan Asia, the Tubi anime stream, the Crunchyroll and Netflix curated dub, and the home videos dubbed by Bang Zoom! Entertainment and released through Discotek Media all romanize the Japanese names instead. This means a single character can appear under multiple English names depending on which version a viewer encounters, making the localization history as layered as the story itself.
