Playing career
Borer grew up in Brooklyn Park and played junior hockey with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor before attending St. Cloud State University of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The Carolina Hurricanes selected him in the third round, 69th overall, of the 2004 NHL entry draft. He was recalled to the Hurricanes and played his first NHL game on January 2, 2008 against the Atlanta Thrashers. Two days later, on January 4, he scored his first NHL goal against Thrashers goaltender Kari Lehtonen. That season, Borer appeared in 11 NHL games for Carolina, recording three points (one goal, two assists), four penalty minutes, and averaging 15:17 of ice time per game. Recalled again on February 14, he played three more games for the Hurricanes, averaging nearly 29 shifts and 17:58 of ice time per contest. With the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League, he ranked third among defensemen with 19 points (six goals, 13 assists) and led the team with a +19 plus/minus rating. On February 21, 2008, Borer was returned to Albany after serving as a loan replacement for the injured Bret Hedican. He sustained a season-ending injury on March 28, 2008 during a game against the Syracuse Crunch after colliding with center Trevor Frischmon. Borer described the play: the ice had not frozen properly, his skate stuck in water, and his knee twisted as he reached for the puck while an opponent lined up to hit him. He underwent surgery on his right knee on April 7, 2008 in Raleigh, North Carolina, performed by Carolina Hurricanes team doctors. In late February 2009, he suffered another season-ending injury, a C5 cervical spine fracture, during a team bus accident in Albany. Before the 2010–11 season, he signed with the Carolina Hurricanes organization but was assigned to their AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers, where he played 67 games and recorded two goals and 14 points. On August 18, 2011, he signed with HC Pardubice of the Czech Extraliga, his first contract with a European club.
