Jaccob Scott Slavin is an American professional ice hockey defenseman and alternate captain for the Carolina Hurricanes. He was selected by the Hurricanes in the fourth round of the 2012 NHL entry draft and won the Stanley Cup with the team in 2026. Slavin is a two-time recipient of the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy and has been recognized as one of the top defensive defensemen of his era.

Playing career

As a youth, Slavin played in the 2007 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the Colorado Thunderbirds minor ice hockey team. After being drafted by the Hurricanes in 2012, he chose to play for Colorado College in the NCAA Division I. In his first season, he was named NCHC Rookie of the Year and earned spots on the NCHC All-Rookie Team and the NCHC All-Conference Second Team. The following year, he was selected to the NCHC All-Conference First Team before signing a three-year entry-level contract with the Hurricanes and leaving college. He began the 2015–16 season with the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL, recording seven assists in his first 14 games. Recalled by Carolina, he made his NHL debut on November 20, 2015, and scored his first NHL hat-trick on March 13, 2017, against the New York Islanders. On July 12, 2017, Slavin signed a seven-year, $37.1 million contract with the Hurricanes, effective from the 2018–19 season. He scored his first career playoff goal on August 1, 2020, against the New York Rangers, becoming the first player to score an NHL goal in August. Slavin won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for the 2020–21 season after taking only one minor penalty while averaging 22:59 of ice time over 52 games. He won the trophy again for the 2023–24 season, recording 37 points and just four minor penalties in 81 games, becoming the second defenseman after Red Kelly to win the award multiple times. On July 1, 2024, he signed an eight-year, $51.69 million contract extension with the Hurricanes. Slavin became the second American to win an Olympic gold medal and the Stanley Cup in the same year after winning the 2026 Stanley Cup, and is one of five American players to have achieved both.
