Biology and range

Siphamia species are classified in the order Perciformes according to GBIF, or Apogoniformes according to WoRMS.[2][1] Recognized species include Siphamia arabica, described by Gon and G. R. Allen in 2012.[3] Another recognized species is Siphamia argentea, described by Lachner in 1953, also known as the silver siphonfish.[3] The genus is placed within the class Teleostei by WoRMS.[1]

Siphamia is found in both marine and brackish environments.[1] The only known fossil belonging to this genus is Siphamia minor, a species identified from otoliths dating to the Burdigalian stage of the Miocene epoch, found in southwestern India.[4]

What the specialist sources record

The WoRMS database records Siphamia as accepted at genus rank, family Apogonidae, order Apogoniformes, class Teleostei.[1] The GBIF Backbone Taxonomy lists Siphamia as accepted, kingdom Animalia, phylum Chordata, order Perciformes, family Apogonidae.[2] According to the Wikipedia entry, the sole fossil evidence for Siphamia is Siphamia minor from the Miocene of southwestern India, which references a 2022 study by Nora published in PalZ.[4]
