Last updated

He studied piano at Leeds School of Music and later became a principal lecturer there.[1][2] Newton has recorded fifteen albums as a leader and collaborated on over eighty others.[3]

Life and work

Newton played clarinet, bassoon and piano before focusing on jazz piano.[1] After returning to Scotland in the early 1980s, he built a reputation as an accompanist for visiting American musicians.[4] Buddy DeFranco was the artist with whom Newton made his first recording in 1986.[4] During the 1990s, Newton acted as the musical director for singer Carol Kidd.[4]

Leeds College of Music awarded Newton a fellowship in 2003.[2]

What the cited sources add

The Leeds College of Music profile states that Newton began his career in theatre before switching to jazz piano.[3] It notes that his first recording was with Martin Taylor and Buddy De Franco, and that his old Leeds Conservatoire roommate Alan Barnes persuaded him to move to London.[3] The same source reports that Newton has won prizes at the British Jazz Awards thirteen times.[3]
