History

The idea for Augury was discussed among members as early as 1997, but the band formed in 2002 when lead guitarist Mathieu Marcotte left his band Spasme and began auditioning drummers. He was joined by bassist Dominic "Forest" Lapointe of Atheretic and vocalist Arianne Fleury. Vocalist and guitarist Patrick Loisel joined in February 2002 after leaving Kralizec, and drummer Mathieu Groulx of Adenine joined in June 2002. This lineup wrote six songs and played their first show, but Groulx soon departed due to time constraints and differing musical tastes. The band continued writing and added strings to their compositions. Étienne Gallo joined as drummer, and in September 2004 their debut album Concealed was recorded and released by Galy Records.

Work on the second album began soon after but took four years due to lineup changes. Gallo learned and helped record the songs, but since it was temporary, Antoine Baril was recruited as drummer. Each of Patrick, Forest, and Mathieu wrote a third of the album, diversifying the band's sound. During this writing period, members of Kataklysm introduced Augury's songs to Nuclear Blast, who signed the band and let them retain their sound. Fragmentary Evidence was released in July and August 2009 in Europe and North America respectively. Due to the layered, complex, and lengthy nature of songs like "Jupiter to Ignite" and "Oversee the Rebirth," Augury does not play the former and only plays the first half of the latter live.

Between late 2009 and early 2010, the band parted ways with drummer Antoine Baril and long-time bassist Dominic Lapointe. Former Neuraxis drummer Tommy McKinnon (who joined full-time) and MAG bassist Christian Pacaud were recruited as temporary replacements for The American Defloration North American tour with The Black Dahlia Murder, Obscura, and Hatesphere. Étienne Gallo and Dominic Lapointe rejoined the band in 2013. In 2018, Augury released the digital album Illusive Golden Age.
