Host city
The 37th All-Star Game was the first held in Calgary, taking place at the two-year-old Olympic Saddledome, built after the Flames' arrival and in preparation for the 1988 Winter Olympics. A sell-out crowd of 16,825 attended, and the gala also sold out; the Flames raised $100,000 for charity. The traditional black-tie banquet was replaced with a request for western wear. Campbell Conference and Edmonton Oilers head coach Glen Sather criticized Calgary fans for booing Wayne Gretzky during introductions and the game, calling it embarrassing. Gretzky downplayed the booing, saying he got a kick out of it. The NHL All-Stars participated in a video segment for the Northern Lights song "Tears Are Not Enough" to raise awareness for the famine in Ethiopia.
Highlights
For the first time, the NHL named honorary captains: Hockey Hall of Fame goaltender Glenn Hall for the Campbell Conference, and recently retired Guy Lafleur for the Wales Conference. Lafleur later returned to play, becoming the only person to serve as an honorary All-Star captain and then play in the NHL. Canadian astronaut Marc Garneau performed the ceremonial faceoff using a puck he had taken into space. Mario Lemieux, facing criticism from commentator Don Cherry for being a "floater" defensively, responded that the Penguins asked him to play offensively. Lemieux scored two goals, including the game-winner, and added an assist to earn MVP honors, the first rookie to do so. Edmonton's Mike Krushelnyski and Boston's Ray Bourque were named second and third stars; Bourque recorded four assists, Krushelnyski three. No Calgary Flames representative scored. Five European players participated: Swedes Anders Hedberg and Pelle Lindbergh for the Wales Conference, and Swede Thomas Gradin, Czech Miroslav Frycer, and Finn Jari Kurri for the Campbell Conference. Hedberg and Frycer each scored a goal.
