Vijay Mallya is an Indian businessman and former politician who faces extradition from the UK over financial crime allegations.[1] He was the chairman of United Spirits and continues as chairman of United Breweries Group.[2] From 2007 until the team entered administration during the 2018 season, Mallya was a co-owner of the Force India Formula One team.[3]

Life and work
Mallya was born on 18 December 1955 to Vittal Mallya and Lalitha Ramaiah in a Konkani-speaking family.[1][4] He founded Kingfisher Airlines in 2005, which later became insolvent and owed over US$1 billion in bank loans.[5] Mallya was elected to the Rajya Sabha as an independent member from Karnataka in 2002 and again in 2010.[6] He resigned from the Rajya Sabha on 2 May 2016, one day before an ethics committee planned to recommend his expulsion.[7]

What the cited sources add
A 2017 Times of India article reported Mallya saying he enjoys the fruits of his labors and plans Force India's next decade.[8] Mallya stated he has lived in Britain since 1992 and considers it a second home.[8] According to the Tofler source, Mallya's United Breweries Group became owner of East Bengal FC in 1998.[9] The same source reported that Mallya characterized the legal actions against him as a "witch hunt".[8]
