Friedrich Engelhorn, born on 17 July 1821 in Mannheim, was a German industrialist best known for founding BASF in Ludwigshafen. His father ran a brewery and pub. Engelhorn left school at age thirteen to begin a three-year apprenticeship as a goldsmith. After traveling through several European cities as a journeyman, he opened his own goldsmith shop in Mannheim in 1847. The 1848 revolution hurt his business, so in the summer of that year he partnered with two others to start a private gasworks that sold bottled gas for lighting. His experience led to him being put in charge of building a new public gasworks in Mannheim in 1851, and he became its manager when it opened that December.

When William Henry Perkin discovered a method for making synthetic organic dye from coal tar in 1856, Engelhorn saw an opportunity. Using the coal tar left over from gas production, he set up a small aniline and dye factory near the Mannheim gasworks, which began producing fuchsin in 1861. In 1865, wanting to expand in the chemical industry, he co-founded the Badische Anilin- & Soda-Fabrik (BASF) on 6 April. The founders initially tried to buy land in Mannheim, but the town council refused. The next day, Engelhorn—now the company’s commercial director—purchased land in neighboring Ludwigshafen instead. BASF grew quickly, employing over 300 workers within two years. By 1873 it had a sales office in New York, and in 1876 it opened a production site in Butirki near Moscow, followed by a French factory in Neuville-sur-Saône in 1878. From the start, BASF invested in research. In 1868 Engelhorn hired chemist Heinrich Caro as the first head of its laboratory. Working with professors Carl Graebe and Carl Liebermann, Caro discovered the first synthetic alizarin dye, patented in Prussia, France, and England in 1869.

After disagreements with his partners, Engelhorn moved to BASF’s supervisory board in 1884 and left the company the following year. In 1883 he had bought the medical firm Boehringer und Söhne in Mannheim, putting his oldest son in charge that same year. He also served on the supervisory boards of other companies, such as the Deutsche Zelluloidfabrik in Eilenburg. Engelhorn died in Mannheim on 11 March 1902. He was a Christian. In 1957, BASF named its new 101-meter commercial high-rise—a landmark in Ludwigshafen—after him.
