Earl Elmer Bakken (January 10, 1924 – October 21, 2018) was an American engineer, inventor, businessman and philanthropist. He founded Medtronic, where he developed the first external, battery-operated, transistorized, wearable artificial pacemaker in 1957. Born in Columbia Heights, Minnesota, of Norwegian ancestry, Bakken was a self-described "nerd" fascinated by electricity and electronics. He earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering in 1948 and later a Master's degree with a minor in mathematics, both from the University of Minnesota. His inspiration came from Mary Shelley's novel *Frankenstein* and the 1931 film version starring Boris Karloff, which directly influenced his work on pacemakers and the founding of Medtronic. Bakken later founded The Bakken, a museum in Minneapolis about medical science and electricity, featuring an extensive Frankenstein display.
