Adnan Khashoggi was a Saudi businessman and arms dealer known for his opulent lifestyle and geopolitical influence.[1] His net worth was estimated at around $4 billion during his peak in the early 1980s.[1] At St Thomas' Hospital in London, on 6 June 2017, Adnan Khashoggi passed away at age 81 while receiving medical care for Parkinson's disease.[2]

Key facts and history

Khashoggi was implicated in the Iran–Contra affair as a key middleman in the arms-for-hostages exchange.[3] On 25 July 1935, in Mecca, Adnan Khashoggi entered the world as the child of Muhammad Khashoggi—who served as the personal physician to King Abdul Aziz Al Saud—and Samiha Ahmed.[4][5] Khashoggi abandoned his academic pursuits to launch a career in business.[6] By leasing Kenworth trucks to a construction firm, Khashoggi earned his initial $250,000 and subsequently became the Saudi Arabia–based representative for Kenworth.[7][5]

Lockheed disbursed $106 million in commissions to Khashoggi over the period from 1970 to 1975.[8][9] Swiss authorities detained Khashoggi in 1988 on suspicion of hiding funds, and he remained in custody for three months.[10] A federal jury in Manhattan, United States, cleared Khashoggi of racketeering and fraud charges in 1990.[11]

What the cited sources add

The khashoggi.com account states that Khashoggi first learned the commercial value of facilitating a deal at school, earning $1,000 for introducing a Libyan classmate to an Egyptian classmate.[5] The same source notes that Khashoggi used money from his father for a car to buy Kenworth trucks for his first big deal.[5] The Guardian obituary reports that Khashoggi moved into the arms business in 1962, helping to supply Yemen under attack from Egyptian-backed rebels.[9] The same source notes that Yasser Arafat ordered Khashoggi's assassination because of his involvement in Operation Moses.[5]
