Aristotle Onassis

Greek-Argentine shipping magnate who built the world's largest private fleet.

Last updated

Onassis died at age 69 on 15 March 1975 of pneumonia following gall bladder surgery.[1] A Greek and Argentine business magnate and shipping tycoon, Aristotle Socrates Onassis built the largest privately-owned shipping fleet globally.[2] His spouses included Athina Mary Livanos and, later, American former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy; he also had a lengthy romantic involvement with opera singer Maria Callas.[2]

Key facts and history

When he graduated from the local Evangelical Greek School at age 16, he spoke four languages: Greek, Turkish, Spanish, and English.[3] He married Athina Mary Livanos, daughter of shipping magnate Stavros G. Livanos, on 28 December 1946 when she was 17 and he was 40.[4] Onassis arrived in Monaco in 1953 and took control of Société des bains de mer de Monaco, which owned the Monte Carlo Casino and other major assets.[5] He founded the privatized Olympic Airways in 1957.[6]

Onassis died at the American Hospital of Paris in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, of pneumonia exacerbated by cortisone he was taking for myasthenia gravis.[1] Born in 1906 to Greek parents Socrates Onassis and Penelope Dologlou, Aristotle Socrates Onassis came into the world in Karataş, a suburb of the Ottoman port city of Smyrna.[7] Following the Great Fire of Smyrna in 1922, the Onassis family lost their property and were forced to flee as refugees to Greece.[8] Two children were born to Onassis and Livanos: a son named Alexander and a daughter named Christina.[4]

What the cited sources add

Fulsom further reports that after a meeting with Maheu, Nixon whispered, "if it turns out we have to kill the bastard don't do it on American soil"[9] An India Today article states that Jackie Kennedy was one of the world's most expensive women, estimated to have spent nearly 500,000 on clothes in one year.[10]
