Background

Amy and Emily Chung grew up in South London. Their mother was born in Yangon after her own parents moved there from Dawei in southern Myanmar. The sisters are of Anglo-Burmese-Chinese descent and both work as NHS doctors: Emily is a consultant in sexual health and HIV, while Amy is a registrar in psychiatry. After visiting Myanmar for the first time in 2012, they came back to the UK and started a supper club focused on Burmese food as a tribute to their background. The club began in London in 2013. It gained widespread notice in 2017 when critic Grace Dent called their mohinga the best dish she ate that year, describing it as “joyous.” The following year, The Observer Food Monthly included The Rangoon Sisters on its list of everything it loved in food at the time. The supper club donates its profits to various charities, and by July 2020 it had raised more than £10,000. Over two years, while still working as doctors, the sisters wrote their first cookbook. It features recipes from the club along with new ones, and is designed to be approachable for home cooks of any skill level.
