Lore & Background

Anya is introduced in season 3 as Anyanka, a 1,120-year-old vengeance demon who grants the wishes of scorned women. She prompts Cordelia Chase to wish Buffy never came to Sunnydale, creating an alternate reality where vampires have overtaken the town. Rupert Giles destroys her necklace, returning the world to normal and leaving Anya mortal and powerless. In season 4, she seduces Xander and they begin dating; her straightforward, often tactless remarks put her at odds with the other Scoobies, especially Willow, who distrusts her.

In season 5, she discovers her love for money and capitalism, and Giles hires her as a cashier at The Magic Box. Xander proposes to Anya at the end of season 5, but he leaves her at the altar in season 6 because he fears becoming abusive like his father. Grief-stricken, Anya becomes a vengeance demon again and takes comfort in sex with Spike. In season 7, flashbacks reveal she was originally a human named Aud; her lover Olaf cheated on her, and she transformed him into a troll.

D'Hoffryn granted her wish-granting abilities and renamed her Anyanka. After taking vengeance on college boys by unleashing a spider-like demon that kills them, D'Hoffryn strips her of her powers again, making her mortal once more. She reconciles with Xander and admits they still love each other, though they never officially resume their relationship. In the series finale, "Chosen," Anya is killed by a Bringer while fighting the First Evil at Sunnydale High School.

Reader's Guide

Anya Jenkins serves as a unique member of the Scooby Gang, bridging the gap between supernatural entities and human morality. Formerly a vengeance demon named Anyanka who granted wishes for over 1,120 years, she lost her powers and became mortal after Giles destroyed her necklace. Her arc explores the confusion of modern life through an ancient entity's eyes, providing comic relief while grappling with genuine trauma and loss. Her relationship with Xander is central to her development, marked by engagement, breakup, and eventual reconciliation.

She struggles with social norms, often taking idioms literally or misunderstanding human customs like dating and employment. Despite her comedic exterior, she proves a capable warrior in the final battle against the First Evil. She appears as a recurring guest in seasons 3 and 4, then as a series regular in seasons 5, 6, and 7. Her journey highlights themes of identity, symbolism, and sexuality, as analyzed by academics through psychoanalytical and feminist approaches.
