Bowen Byram was born to Stacey and Shawn Byram in Cranbrook, British Columbia. His father, a former NHL player, coached him until age 12, after which Byram joined the Lethbridge Golden Hawks of the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League. He spent two seasons there, leading all defencemen in scoring during the 2015–16 season with 22 goals and 37 assists in 34 games, and winning the AMBHL championship. The Vancouver Giants selected Byram third overall in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft.
