Summary
Jake and Rosa spend time behind bars until the precinct manages to bring down Melanie Hawkins, a move that requires Holt to strike a bargain with gangster Seamus Murphy. Once freed, Jake admits he isn't ready to jump back into active duty, and Rosa ends her relationship with Adrian. At the fifth annual Halloween heist, Jake pops the question to Amy, and the two become engaged. While in Los Angeles for the funeral of the Nine-Nine's former captain, Holt discovers he is a candidate for police commissioner, and the team pledges to assist him in handling Murphy.
Rosa comes out as bisexual. Gina returns to work after her maternity leave. The squad finds a legal workaround allowing Holt to honor his deal with Murphy without compromising his principles, but Murphy learns of the trick and threatens Kevin's safety. Kevin spends two months in a safe house with Jake to evade Murphy.
Once the team locates Murphy's hideout, Kevin subdues the mobster, and Murphy and his crew are arrested. Charles tries launching a food truck business. Amy passes the sergeant's exam. After a bomb threat derails their wedding plans, Jake and Amy get married outside the precinct.
The season concludes at their wedding reception, where the group remains uncertain whether Holt has secured the commissioner position.
Reception
The fifth season was highly praised by both critics and viewers for its humor, the prison storyline, the cast's performances, and the writing, with the ensemble's chemistry receiving particular acclaim. Many felt it served as a heartwarming conclusion to the show's run on Fox, and some considered it among the series' best. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a perfect 100% approval rating and an average score of 8.5 out of 10, based on 14 reviews. The site's critics' consensus noted that the season's joyful tone could have worked as a satisfying series finale, but the cast's enduring chemistry made it a relief that the characters would continue solving crimes.
