A gritty teen drama that broke boundaries on children's TV.

From 1989 to 2006, BBC One and later CBBC broadcast Byker Grove, a British teen drama set in a Newcastle youth club. Aimed at older teens and young adults, the show tackled serious, often controversial plots. History

The BBC series Byker Grove, set in a Newcastle youth club, aired for 18 series from 1989 to 2006. Creator Andrea Wonfor worked with soap writer Adele Rose in 1987 to produce a pilot about 8- to 11-year-olds at an after-school club. Anna Home, then head of the BBC’s children’s department, approved a first run of six 25-minute episodes in autumn 1988. The main characters’ ages shifted to 12–16 after input from initial producer-director Matthew Robinson. In March 2008, Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly’s company Gallowgate Productions bought the rights. The pair, who once played characters PJ and Duncan on the show, announced a 2024 reboot titled Byker in July 2023, produced with Mitre Studios and Fulwell 73. As of September 2024, the project remained in early development.

Production

Byker Grove was not filmed in the Byker area of Newcastle; the youth club set was in Benwell, west of the city. The building seen on-screen, The Mitre, was formerly a nightclub and a pub. After the success of the first series, the BBC's London property department bought The Mitre and granted Zenith Television a permanent licence to film there. Scenes representing Denton Burn Youth Club for Series 15 were filmed at Raby Street Youth Club, next to Byker Primary School. On 11 May 2006, the BBC announced the series would end after 17 years as part of a strategy for CBBC to focus on primary-school-age children. Filming wrapped on 24 August, and the final series started on the CBBC Channel on 7 October 2006. In July 2025, STV Player and ITVX signed a co-exclusivity deal with Mitre Studios to stream every episode; the first five series were available on STV Player, with the rest on both services later that year. The entire series became available on ITVX on 16 November 2025. The show launched the careers of Ant McPartlin, Declan Donnelly, Jill Halfpenny, Donna Air, Andrew Hayden-Smith, and others including Charlie Hunnam.

Storylines

Byker Grove was not intended for young children but aimed at a young adult and teenage audience, tackling controversial subjects such as drug addiction, child abuse, homelessness, teen pregnancy, homophobia and abortion. Characters were rarely shown in school; one major setting was the foster home run by Lou Gallagher. In November 1994, the show featured the first gay kiss on UK children's television when Noddy Fishwick kissed his friend Gary Hendrix at the back of a cinema, causing tabloid outrage but receiving support from the BBC, gay teenagers, teachers and parents. The 2004 series saw the character Bradley coming out as gay to his girlfriend Sadie. The series frequently depicted life as unjust, with bad things happening to good people, including Flora's death from a brain tumour, Greg's paralysis after a fall, Jemma Dobson's electrocution, and youth leader Geoff Keegan's death in a gas explosion. Characters who stole and joy-rode cars often died in them; P.J. was blinded during an unsupervised paintballing session after removing his face guard.

The bands of Byker Grove

Several musical acts were spun off from the series. Michelle Charles, as her character Charley, released singles including 'The Best Thing'. PJ & Duncan, who became Ant & Dec for The Cult of... album, had hits such as 'Let's Get Ready to Rhumble'. Byker Grooove, a girl band featuring Donna Air, Jayni Hoy and Vicky Taylor, released 'Love Your Sexy...!!', which reached No. 48 on the UK Singles Chart in December 1994; they later evolved into the duo Crush. Summer Matthews, as Emma Miller, released 'Little Miss Perfect'. Point Break, a boyband featuring Brett Adams and David Oliver, released singles including 'Do We Rock'. Other connections include Freefaller, the Kane Gang (writers of the original theme music), and Kenickie, whose bassist Emmy Kate Montrose appeared in the series under her real name Emma Jackson.
