Characters and sketches

The programme is hosted by Brodkin in character as Nelson before a studio audience, including audience interaction and games with unusual prizes such as a pair of sunglasses, a victory belt and a tree. It also features the characters Omelette and Nelson's nan. Inserted recorded sketches showcase three other characters portrayed by Brodkin; due to time limitations, some episodes include only two insert sketches, while others feature all three. These sketches are: 110% Bent, a spoof of fly-on-the-wall celebrity documentaries featuring Brodkin as the unintelligent Premiership footballer Jason Bent, briefly a Manchester City player; Hospital Life, a parody of daytime medical documentaries with Brodkin as the insensitive Dr. Bob; and Faliraki Nights, a spoof of late-evening nightlife documentaries featuring Brodkin as holiday rep Chris Young, with narration by former BBC Three continuity announcer Lola Buckley.

Some characters appeared in Brodkin's earlier TV work: Jason Bent sketches appeared in Al Murray's Multiple Personality Disorder, which also featured Lee Nelson in comic monologues; Dr. Bob had appeared as Dr. Omprakash in BBC Three's The Wall.

Reception

The show received mainly negative reviews from critics despite popular appeal. Liam Tucker of TV Pixie described it as a pile of irredeemable crap with witless demi-jokes limping on Brodkin's questionable talent. Stuart Heritage of The Guardian remarked that the show suffers from being almost the exact scientific opposite of well good. Nonetheless, ratings led the BBC to commission a second show, Lee Nelson's Well Funny People.
