The band formed in mid-2018 under the name Cove, taken from a Deftones song. After writing songs in various styles, they decided to pursue a nu metal sound upon hearing a demo of 'Grit'. They released their debut single 'Grit' on 21 August 2019, followed by 'Mortal Fear' and 'De[in]fect' by February 2020. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, the band wrote new material inspired by Freeman's experiences with mental health and isolation. They signed to Rude Records in August 2021, which reissued their back catalog of singles. Their debut EP New Skin arrived on 25 February 2022, and the planned second EP evolved into their debut album A Mind Waiting to Die, released on 17 February 2023. The album was pushed back due to Slipknot releasing an album in September 2022. It received mixed-to-positive reviews and was named one of the best albums of 2023 by Kerrang! and Rock Sound. The band performed at 2000trees, Download, Reading & Leeds, and Misery Loves Company festivals in 2023. Their second album, Who Are You When No One is Watching?, was announced on 4 April 2024 with the single 'To the Grave', partially inspired by Freeman's PTSD after an assault in early 2023. It was released on 12 July 2024. In July 2024, the band headlined a tour leading to Radar Festival. In August 2024, A Mind Waiting to Die won 'Best Breakthrough Album' at the Heavy Music Awards. In October and November 2025, they supported Stray from the Path on their final UK and European tour. In April 2026, they signed to Century Media Records and released the single 'Faceless'. They performed at Radar Festival again in August 2026 and made their first main stage appearance at a major festival at Bloodstock Open Air. From Cove to Graphic Nature: Finding a Sound Worth Playing

Graphic Nature began life in mid-2018 under the name Cove, a title borrowed from a Deftones track on their 2012 album Koi No Yokan. The five-piece was assembled by vocalist Harvey Freeman, a Londoner, alongside guitarists Pete Woolven and Matas Michaliovskis, bassist Charlie Smith, and drummer Jack Bowdery, all of whom were based in Kent. In their first year together the group cycled through five to ten compositions spanning metalcore and hardcore, but a rough demo of a song called "Grit" that Woolven circulated changed their trajectory. Freeman later explained to Rock Sound that the band had been playing material they didn't genuinely love, so they committed to the nu metal sound of the 90s they had grown up with, layering in electronics. Their debut single "Grit" arrived in August 2019, followed by "Mortal Fear" and "De[in]fect" by early 2020, and the group gained experience by supporting acts like Palm Reader, MTXS, and Creature.
