Total Science is the alias used by drum and bass duo Jason Greenhalgh and Paul Smith. Their partnership began in 1987 when they met on the Blackbird Leys estate in Oxford, England, bonded by a shared passion for hip hop. When hardcore emerged in the early nineties, it pulled their focus from collecting records to DJing and then to making their own music. Greenhalgh first made a name for himself as Q Project with the 1991 track "Freestyle Fanatic."
In 1994, the two started working together as Funky Technicians, releasing "You Gotta Believe" as the first of several records that steered their sound away from the darkside movement and toward imprints like Lucky Spin, Basement, and Good Looking. After half a dozen years of putting out singles on other labels, they founded CIA Records near the end of 1997 with assistance from Brillo of Timeless Recordings. A key moment came with their Silent Reign EP on Goldie's Metalheadz, followed by a Bad Company remix of "Champion Sound" for their own label.
Their debut album, Advance, arrived in 2000 and included downtempo experiments that appeared as a series of "Breaks" on many of their earlier EPs. Greenhalgh, also known as Q Project, is widely recognized for "Champion Sound," a jungle anthem from the 1990s.
