Brookes Brothers

London-based drum and bass duo and Breakbeat Kaos signees.

Phil and Dan Brookes, the duo behind the Brookes Brothers, are drum and bass producers based in London. Their first release, "Portal" / "Desert Island," came out in 2006 on Danny Wheeler's W10 label. They then worked with Sub Focus on the track "Verano." The following year, they signed an exclusive deal with Breakbeat Kaos, the label run by DJ Fresh and Adam F. Their debut single for the label, "Hard Knocks" / "Mistakes," charted at number 25 on the UK Indie Chart and got airplay from Zane Lowe, Pete Tong, and the Trophy Twins, as well as support from drum and bass DJs like Andy C, Grooverider, and Adam F. The brothers held regular spots at Fabric and Herbal nightclubs, and they played DJ sets both in the UK and abroad. History

The Brookes Brothers first appeared in 2006 with the double A-side "Portal" / "Desert Island" on Danny Wheeler's W10 imprint. That was followed by "Verano", a collaborative effort with Nick Douwma, otherwise known as Sub Focus. In 2007, they were exclusively signed to DJ Fresh and Adam F's label Breakbeat Kaos. Their first release there was "Hard Knocks" / "Mistakes", which received major radio support from Zane Lowe, Pete Tong and the Trophy Twins, as well as staple drum & bass DJ's such as Andy C, Grooverider, and Adam F. The double A-side entered the UK Indie Chart at number 25.

Also in 2007, they collaborated with another rising drum and bass star, Culture Shock, creating the track "Rework". In 2008, they continued with tunes including "F-Zero", "Gold Rush", "Dawn Treader" and "Crackdown". They held residencies in both Fabric and Herbal nightclubs, playing regular national and international DJ sets. Their self-titled debut album was finally released in 2011 under the label Breakbeat Kaos.

Equipment and influences

Both brothers have their own recording studio, situated five minutes apart. They both run custom-built PCs running Windows 7 and Cubase 6.5. Dan uses Fostex PM1s as monitors, while Phil uses KRK Rokit 8s. They mix everything down using a combination of the PM1s and headphones. They use a Steinberg UR824 soundcard. As music influences they cite Earth, Wind & Fire, The Whispers, Dazz Band, Hall & Oates, Daft Punk, Jazzanova, MJ Cole, Photek, Marcus Intalex and Calibre.
