The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse

The characters of Royston Vasey invade the real world.

Last updated

The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse is a 2005 British comedy horror film based on the television series of the same name. It marks the directorial debut of Steve Bendelack and was written by the series' cast along with Jeremy Dyson. The film features the series' characters entering the real world and confronting their creators as the fictional town of Royston Vasey faces apocalyptic events.

Plot

The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse begins when Jeremy Dyson, portrayed by Michael Sheen, pitches a new series idea to his colleagues: everyone in Royston Vasey wakes up with a tail. The other writers prefer to pursue different projects. Dyson is then confronted by Papa Lazarou, Edward, and Tubbs, and while trying to escape, he tumbles off a cliff. Meanwhile, at the church, Bernice Woodall informs Pauline Campbell-Jones and Mr. Chinnery that signs of the Apocalypse are appearing.

Hilary Briss has broken out of prison, takes Herr Lipp hostage, and commandeers a car driven by Geoff Tipps. As fireballs rain down, Briss leads them through a door in the church crypt, which deposits them in Hadfield, Derbyshire—the real town that doubles as Royston Vasey in the television series. After Lazarou and the Tattsyrups explain the situation, Briss, Herr Lipp, and Geoff Tipps head to London. Lipp impersonates his creator, Steve Pemberton, and visits his home, where he finds Pemberton has been ignoring his family.

Briss and Tipps examine the writers' new project, a historical horror called The King's Evil, and Briss recaptures Pemberton after he tries to flee. Tipps writes himself into the script as the hero, while Lipp grows attached to Pemberton's children and searches his belongings for notes. Briss takes Pemberton to Hadfield, where Pemberton phones Reece Shearsmith. Shearsmith initially thinks it's a joke, but Briss gets on the line.

Shearsmith and Mark Gatiss capture Lipp and head to Hadfield. They return to Royston Vasey through the dimensional door and exchange hostages, but Pemberton is killed by a stray bullet.

Dr. Erasmus Pea, the villain from The King's Evil, urges Briss to join him; Briss refuses. Pea then kills his fellow characters and transforms them into a giant homunculus, which Briss fights. Shearsmith and Gatiss climb the church wall to escape, but Shearsmith falls to his death.
