Nina Forever
A darkly original romantic triangle with a supernatural twist.
Last updated
Nina Forever is a 2015 British horror comedy film written and directed by brothers Ben and Chris Blaine. It stars Fiona O'Shaughnessy, Abigail Hardingham, and Cian Barry. The film premiered at the 2015 SXSW film festival. O'Shaughnessy plays Nina, a revenant who comes back to life to torment her ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend whenever they have sex.
Production
The writer-directors aimed to prevent the film from becoming camp by maintaining a serious tone, allowing audiences to relate to the characters despite the absurd situations. They emphasized the metaphor of relationship baggage beyond the literal supernatural events. Production started in May 2013 in the UK, and the Blaine brothers funded aspects through a Kickstarter campaign, stating they made the film they wanted and invited others to join the process.
Reception
Rotten Tomatoes reported that 97% of 32 surveyed critics gave a positive review, with an average rating of 8/10 and a consensus calling the film diabolically original and daringly dark. Metacritic rated it 75 out of 100 based on 10 reviews. Wayne Alan Brenner of The Austin Chronicle described it as a deftly unnerving collaboration between Lorrie Moore and Clive Barker. Patrick Cooper of Bloody Disgusting gave 3.5/5 stars, praising the balance between absurdity and tough themes like grief.
Drew Tinnin of Dread Central awarded 4/5 stars, noting the film's unique tonal balance and genuine handling of loss. William Bibbiani of CraveOnline rated it 9/10, calling it a unique exploration of horror, love, and loss. Matt Donato of We Got This Covered gave 3.5/5 stars, highlighting the engaging performances. Oktay Ege Kozak of Indiewire gave a B+, suggesting the film would have worked better as a short but praising its original romance.
Michael Rechtshaffen of the Los Angeles Times compared it to Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands and called it a diabolically effective anti-date movie. At the British Independent Film Awards 2015, the Blaine brothers were nominated for Best Debut Director, and Abigail Hardingham won Best Newcomer.
