Breakfast News
The BBC's flagship breakfast programme from 1989 to 2000.
Last updated
Breakfast News debuted on BBC1 on 2 October 1989, replacing the earlier programme Breakfast Time. Its original launch date of 18 September 1989 was delayed by two weeks because of technical problems in its new studio. The show used a rolling news format, with news summaries every quarter of an hour, weather and regional news every half hour, a review of the day’s newspapers, and regular business updates.
From 22 November 1989, when televised coverage of the House of Commons began, the 8 am to 8.15 am segment was also broadcast on BBC2 as part of a news hour that included a review of the previous day’s parliamentary proceedings. The final edition of Breakfast News aired on 15 September 2000, and it relaunched as BBC Breakfast on 2 October 2000.
Presentation
The programme had three major visual changes. The first look lasted until 8 April 1993.
A revamp on 13 April 1993 moved the show to the same set used for the One, Six, and Nine O’Clock News bulletins. Another revamp on 2 June 1997 removed “BBC” from the on-screen title, leaving it as simply Breakfast News. During this final period, the tone softened: a sofa set returned, more features were added, and the presenting team interacted more.
Broadcasting
Breakfast News aired only on weekdays, with no weekend editions, except during the early stages of the 1991 Gulf War when weekend shows were broadcast. In contrast, ITV’s TV-am and later GMTV aired seven days a week. In September 1991, the BBC introduced a short five-minute weekend breakfast news summary. The Saturday edition aired at 7:25 am to start the Saturday schedule, but it was not presented from the Breakfast News set; instead, it came from the main BBC News set in the newsroom.
This Saturday bulletin was dropped in autumn 1999, with the last one on 11 September 1999. BBC Two had already been showing an hour of news from BBC News 24, branded as “Weekend 24,” on Saturday mornings from 8 am to 9 am since 31 January 1998, making the short Saturday summary redundant. On Sundays, a short morning bulletin aired at 9:10 am, later incorporated into the Breakfast with Frost programme, which launched on 3 January 1993.
Business Breakfast
Business Breakfast was a daily programme that aired from 6 am to 7 am, directly before Breakfast News. It originally ran as part of Breakfast News from 6:34 am to 6:55 am. From 4 January 2000, Business Breakfast was absorbed into Breakfast News, which then started at 6 am each weekday. Business news remained a key feature in the first hour, but it was no longer a separate programme.
Breakfast News Extra
Breakfast News Extra launched on 5 February 1996 to compete with Lorraine Kelly on GMTV. Hosted by Juliet Morris from the Breakfast News office on a blue sofa, it was short-lived and cancelled in summer 1997, with the last edition on 29 August 1997. By then, the main Breakfast News had undergone a dramatic visual revamp, including a new studio set with sofas alongside the main desk.
Lore & Background
From 22 November 1989, following the commencement of televised coverage of the House of Commons, the 8am to 8.15am part of the programme was simulcast on BBC2 as part of a new news hour which encompassed a review of the previous day's proceedings at Westminster. The final edition of Breakfast News aired on 15 September 2000 and on 2 October 2000 it relaunched as BBC Breakfast.
