History

Honour and Glory Boxing Academy opened in 2020 at the Samuel Montagu Youth Centre in Kidbrooke, founded by head coach Anton Pattenden. The club got a boost from construction firm Durkan Regen, which gave £5,000 for a fight night and later £10,000 for two new boxing rings, swapping out equipment at the youth centre that was two decades old. Based in Kidbrooke, near the Kidbrooke Village regeneration zone in south-east London, the academy serves areas including Greenwich, Lewisham, Eltham, Woolwich, and Blackheath.

Its amateur boxers have competed internationally: in Spain in 2022 and 2023, Sweden in 2024, and Mexico for a WBA-sanctioned event in 2024. In October 2025, club boxer Charles Whitewood was chosen to fight for the Amateur Boxing Alliance of England at a WBC Amateur event in London, part of the Gloves and Doves initiative. He faced Daniel Severinov of Israel at 67 kg. The event took place at JW3 in north London, pairing an Israeli team of Jewish and Muslim boxers with British fighters to encourage coexistence. The club’s boxers also take part in inter-club shows across England, such as those run by Waltham Cross ABC.

Notable boxers

Honour & Glory Boxing Academy has produced two notable professional boxers: Giorgio Isaila and Ibrahim Mercan. Isaila, a super-welterweight, began training at the gym in January 2021 under Anton Pattenden and former British super-bantamweight champion Matt Marsh. Despite starting boxing from scratch, he built an amateur record of 17 wins from 20 fights, capturing the Senior ABA Championships and the National Novices Championships, and reaching the final of an international tournament in Spain.

He turned professional on 25 November 2023 at York Hall, winning all four rounds against Jordan Grannum on points. As of May 2026, Isaila holds a perfect 10-0 record. Ibrahim Mercan, a cruiserweight, also trains under Pattenden. He made his professional debut on 18 February 2017 and has mostly fought at York Hall in Bethnal Green.

His professional record stands at 6 wins, 0 losses, and 1 draw (6-0-1). By March 2026, BoxRec ranked Mercan 28th among active British cruiserweights.
