Bruce Lee
Martial artist, actor, and founder of Jeet Kune Do.
Last updated
He founded Jeet Kune Do, a hybrid martial arts philosophy drawing from unarmed fighting, self-defense, and Zen Buddhist and Taoist philosophies.[1] Lee is regarded as the first global Chinese film star and helped popularize martial arts films in the 1970s.[1]
Key facts and history
He called his early approach Jun Fan Gung Fu, a modified version of Wing Chun.[2] Lee Hoi-chuen, a Cantonese opera star and Lee's father, introduced his son to film as a child actor; Lee was born in San Francisco but grew up in Hong Kong.[3][4] Lee's martial arts background included training in Wing Chun under Ip Man, as well as tai chi, boxing, and numerous street fights.[3] Upon his 1971 return to Hong Kong, Lee got his first leading film role in The Big Boss (1971); he then starred in Fist of Fury (1972) and wrote and directed The Way of the Dragon (1972).[5][6]
What the cited sources add
The American Heritage Center blog notes that Lee's road to screen stardom began in Oakland, where his Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute attracted the martial arts world's attention.[7] According to the same source, Lee screen-tested for "Number One Son" but the series was scuttled, and his Kato became the real star of The Green Hornet.[7] A CNN article states that Lee's fight with Chuck Norris in The Way of the Dragon is considered one of the best fight scenes of all time.[8] The same source notes that Lee's mixed heritage led to exclusion from formal instruction with Ip Man due to his Eurasian ancestry.[9]
The South China Morning Post states that Lee found Ip Man's wing chun classes through a gang member.[10]
