Archie Moore, born Archibald Lee Wright on December 13, 1913, in Benoit, Mississippi, was an American professional boxer who became the longest-reigning World Light Heavyweight Champion in history, holding the title from 1952 to 1962. His professional career spanned from 1935 to 1963, one of the longest in the sport. Known as "the Mongoose" and later "the Old Mongoose," Moore was a highly strategic and defensive fighter. As of September 2025, BoxRec ranks him as the greatest light heavyweight boxer of all time.
The Associated Press named him the greatest light heavyweight in 1999, and his 132 career knockouts rank second all-time. He also placed fourth on The Ring magazine's list of the 100 greatest punchers. After retiring, Moore briefly trained notable boxers including Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Bob Foster, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, Earnie Shavers, and James Tillis.
Raised in poverty in St. Louis, Missouri, after his father abandoned the family, Moore was given his surname by his aunt and uncle, Cleveland and Willie Pearl Moore. He attended segregated schools but never graduated. Following his uncle's accidental death around 1928, Moore joined a street gang and was sentenced to a reform school for theft, serving 22 months.
He later joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, using his forestry work as training. Moore was denied a world title shot for 15 years, fighting on the road with little financial reward. An important figure in the Black community, he became involved in African American causes after his boxing career and also worked as a character actor in television and film. He died in San Diego, California, at age 84.
