Lang began his career in the Czechoslovak Extraliga with HC Litvínov before being drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1990. He made his NHL debut in 1992–93 and spent time in the International Hockey League before securing a full-time roster spot. After a brief return to Europe, he joined the Pittsburgh Penguins as a free agent in 1997. Lang was briefly claimed by the Boston Bruins in the 1997 NHL Waiver Draft but was claimed off waivers by the Penguins later that same month.

Lang's most productive seasons came with the Penguins, where he played alongside Jaromír Jágr and set career highs in goals, assists, and points in 2000–01. He later signed with the Washington Capitals, where he was reunited with Jágr. In 2003–04, Lang was leading the NHL in scoring when he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings, marking the first time a player was traded while leading the league in points. He finished the season with 79 points and was named to his first NHL All-Star Game.

Internationally, Lang represented Czechoslovakia and later the Czech Republic in four Winter Olympics, winning gold in 1998 and bronze in 2006.
