Stratego

A classic strategy board wargame of hidden ranks and Napoleonic warfare.

Last updated

Milton Bradley introduced the game in the United States in 1961.[1][2] The change from wood to plastic was made for economical reasons and served a structural function.[2] Jacques Johan Mogendorff, a Dutch citizen, invented Stratego prior to 1942.[1][2] Van Perlstein & Roeper Bosch N.V., a Dutch firm, registered the Stratego name as a trademark in 1942.[1][2]

For European distribution, Hausemann and Hotte obtained a license in 1958.[1][2] Painted wood pieces were used in early editions, while later editions switched to colored plastic ones.[3][4] Milton Bradley brought out Electronic Stratego in 1982.[5]

What the cited sources add

The origins of Stratego can be traced back to the traditional Chinese board game Jungle, also known as "Game of the Fighting Animals".[2] A modern Chinese game called Land Battle Chess is a descendant of Jungle and a cousin of Stratego.[2] Hermance Edan filed a patent for a battle game with mobile pieces on a gameboard on November 26, 1908.[2] A French manufacturer sold Edan's game as L'Attaque as early as 1910.[2]

Red and blue colors distinguished the two armies in the 1910 edition.[2]
