Massacre of the Phantomhives
The bloody night that forged the Queen's Watchdog and sealed a demon's bargain.
The Massacre of the Phantomhives is the attack on the Phantomhive manor on December 14, 1885, Ciel's tenth birthday, the dark foundation for Ciel Phantomhive's existence and his contract with Sebastian Michaelis. The manor was attacked by unidentified perpetrators: Ciel's parents died along with the family dog, the original estate was burned, and Ciel was taken and sold into slavery, ending up in the hands of a sadistic, demon-worshipping cult.
Lore & Background
The event serves as the catalyst for the entire series' central contract. During the cult's sacrificial ceremony to summon a demon, the demon arrived but stated that he came in response to Ciel's summoning, not the cult's. The demon who answered became his butler, binding their fates together with a clause that ensures Sebastian will consume Ciel's soul once his revenge is complete. This pact defines every action taken by the Phantomhive household thereafter.
Reader's Guide
The narrative surrounding the massacre is primarily revealed through flashbacks and fragmented memories rather than a linear present-day arc. Early in the story, hints are dropped regarding Ciel's traumatic past, specifically his missing parents and the destruction of his home. It is later revealed that both twins were captured and used in the ritual, with the original Ciel sacrificed and his younger brother assuming his identity.
