Lore & Background
The company's founding philosophy was rooted in independence. During a private screening at New York's School of Visual Arts Theatre, Beyoncé explained her decision: "I started my own company when I decided to manage myself... I felt like I wanted to follow the footsteps of Madonna and be a powerhouse and have my own empire... you don't have to go sign with someone else and share your money and your success—you do it yourself." This ethos defined its major milestones.
In December 2013, Parkwood released her self-titled visual album digitally without prior announcement or promotion. The release generated over 1.2 million tweets in 12 hours, a moment Peter Robinson of The Guardian called "Beyoncégeddon." It debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 and sold 617,000 copies in the US within three days, becoming the fastest-selling album in iTunes Store history at the time. By November 2016, it had sold 8 million copies worldwide.
