Lore & Background

The settlement of the area dates back to ancient times, preceding Romanization. During Muslim rule, the region was considered the granary of Lisbon. The parish is believed to have been formally established in 1279. Renowned for its salubrious air, it attracted aristocrats. In 1463, the veneration of Our Lady of Light commenced after a young man named Pero Martins claimed to have beheld an apparition. The parish was incorporated into the municipality of Belém in 1852 and became part of Lisbon again in 1885. In the 20th century, intensive urbanization occurred, including the development of Bairro Padre Cruz, one of the biggest social housing neighbourhoods in Europe.
