It was designed by HOK Sport Venue Event (now Populous) and cost €160 million, with €22,596,688 supported by the Government of Portugal for UEFA Euro 2004. It is a UEFA category four stadium, the biggest in Portugal, and hosted matches of UEFA Euro 2004 including its final, as well as the 2014 and 2020 UEFA Champions League finals. It was elected the most beautiful stadium in Europe in a 2014 online poll by L'Équipe. By its fifteenth birthday, it had welcomed more than 17 million spectators. It is a potential venue for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Reader's Guide
The stadium's unofficial name, Estádio da Luz, comes from the neighborhood Luz, on the border between the parishes of Benfica and Carnide, itself named after the nearby Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz. The common English translation 'Stadium of Light' is argued to be inaccurate since Luz refers to the original address Estrada da Luz. Architect Damon Lavelle designed the stadium to focus on light and transparency, with a polycarbonate roof supported by four steel arches 43 metres high. In June 2024, Benfica announced a capacity increase to nearly 66,000 by adding 950 seats for people with motor disabilities. In July 2025, renovations concluded, increasing capacity to 68,100.
