Cuisenaire rods
Coloured number rods for hands-on mathematics learning.
Cuisenaire rods are a hands-on mathematics tool that lets students explore concepts like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and finding divisors. These colored number rods were created by Belgian primary school teacher Georges Cuisenaire (1891–1975), who called them *réglettes* ("little rulers"). In the early 1950s, educator Caleb Gattegno helped spread their use. Gattegno noted that students who had struggled with traditional teaching methods made major progress after switching to the rods, eventually performing well in standard arithmetic when they could handle the materials themselves.
The idea of using rods to represent numbers had been tried before by Maria Montessori and Friedrich Fröbel, but Cuisenaire’s version became widely adopted starting in the 1950s. In 1953, he published *Les nombres en couleurs* (*Numbers in Color*), explaining how to use them. Cuisenaire, who also taught music and played the violin, wondered why children found learning tunes easy and enjoyable but not mathematics. This comparison with music led him to experiment in 1931 with ten wooden rods, ranging from 1 cm to 10 cm, each painted a different color. He began using them in his arithmetic lessons. For about 23 years, the invention stayed mostly unknown outside the village of Thuin. Then, in April 1954, British mathematician and math education specialist Caleb Gattegno visited a classroom there and saw students using the rods. Gattegno, who had already founded the International Commission for the Study and Improvement of Mathematics Education (CIEAEM) and the Association of Teachers of Mathematics, described the moment as a turning point. He watched Cuisenaire ask first- and second-graders difficult questions, and they answered immediately, confidently, and accurately. Gattegno’s excitement grew into enthusiasm and a sense of insight.
Gattegno named the rods "Cuisenaire rods" and began evaluating and promoting them. He saw that the rods let students "expand on their latent mathematical abilities in a creative and enjoyable fashion," which shifted his teaching style. He started stepping back and letting students take the lead, saying, "Cuisenaire's gift of the rods led me to teach by non-interference." Although the rods are often used in teacher-led lessons, Gattegno’s student-centered approach inspired others.

Cuisenaire rods have been used in teaching a variety of mathematical concepts across a wide age range of learners, including counting, sequences, patterns, algebraic reasoning, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, ratio, proportion, and modular arithmetic leading to group theory. Though primarily used for mathematics, they have also become popular in language-teaching classrooms, particularly The Silent Way, where they can demonstrate grammatical structures, sentence stress, intonation, and represent physical objects. The rods inspired a student-centered pedagogy; Gattegno's practice of non-interference led him to watch and listen for signs of truth. Educators such as Madeleine Goutard and John Holt wrote about the rods' potential for enabling children to discover mathematics for themselves rather than being taught by recipes. The rods have also been used in New Zealand as part of the immersion-based Te Ataarangi approach for teaching the Māori language, where they are known as rākau, and have appeared in multiple works by New Zealand artist Michael Parekowhai.
