The Calypso is a 35mm film camera built for use both underwater and on land, sealed against water without external housing. It was the brainchild of Jacques Cousteau, built to his specifications by Jean de Wouters, a crew member on Cousteau’s research vessel, the *Calypso*. De Wouters created a prototype in 1957 called the Spiro. The French firm Atoms manufactured the camera, and La Spirotechnique distributed it in Paris starting in 1960. Greased O-rings seal the joints between the camera and shell, and between the lens and camera, making the unit watertight. To load or unload film, the lens is removed, and the strap attachments are hooked under top protrusions and forced downward to lift the internal mechanism out of the shell.

The top of the internal mechanism, which protrudes above the shell, holds the built-in optical viewfinder for the standard 35mm lens, the shutter speed selector, rewind knobs, winding mechanism, shutter release, and an accessory shoe for additional viewfinders. The most unusual feature is a combined wind-on and shutter-release lever. A small rocking lever in front of the accessory shoe locks this mechanism; sliding it to the left disengages the lock. When unlocked, the lever swings forward 65 degrees from the body. Pressing it back releases the shutter; after that, the lever returns to the 65-degree position. Pressing it again cocks the shutter and advances the film. At the camera’s base, a flash sync connector is protected by an aluminum plug, removable with a coin and sealed by an O-ring.

The standard SOM BERTHIOT FLOR 1:3.5 f=35mm lens could be used both underwater and above due to the optical flat protecting front glass, but had no filter thread. Two large aluminium knobs either side of the lens provided aperture and focusing controls.
