Lore & Background

Strongbow was launched in the United Kingdom by H. P. Bulmer in 1960. The cider was named after Richard de Clare, whose nickname 'Strongbow' was believed to derive from his reliance on archers in Ireland, though the notes record that this theory is unlikely because his father Gilbert de Clare was originally known as 'Strongbow', suggesting the nickname was inherited. It was initially marketed as 'the strong cider for men'. By 1970, it was the second-highest selling cider in the world after Bulmer's stablemate Woodpecker. By 2001, Strongbow was among the top ten drinks by sales in pubs and bars in England and Wales.

In the United Kingdom, Strongbow is a blend of bitter-sweet cider and culinary apples, using 50 different varieties. The apples are grown in England, with imports from France used when harvests are poor. It is mass-produced using modern methods and contains apple concentrate and sugar, fermented with a controlled yeast strain. Strongbow in the UK does not contain any artificial sweeteners, flavourings or colouring. The Bulmers Strongbow vat is the largest alcoholic container in the world, with a capacity of 1.5 million gallons (6.8 million litres).

Variations include Strongbow Gold in mainland Europe (5% ABV, over 50% apple juice), Strongbow Dark Fruit (with blackcurrant and blackberry juices), Cloudy Apple (a scrumpy version), Strongbow Rosé, and a tropical flavour with mango and pineapple introduced in 2023. In 2024, a 'Zest' flavour (orange, lemon, lime) and a strawberry flavour were introduced. A low-calorie variant, Strongbow Ultra, was introduced in 2022.

Reader's Guide

Strongbow's significance lies in its position as the world's leading cider by volume, a status it has held for decades. Its production at Bulmer's Hereford plant, which houses the world's largest alcoholic container, underscores the scale of its operation. The brand's history reflects the consolidation of the cider industry: Bulmers was purchased by Scottish & Newcastle in 2003, who were taken over by Heineken in 2008. Heineken then took the brand global in 2011. Strongbow's legacy includes its distinctive advertising, such as the 'thudding arrows' signature since the 1960s and the 1998–2002 campaign featuring Johnny Vaughan that boosted sales by 30 per cent. The brand has adapted to changing tastes with numerous flavour extensions and a low-calorie variant, while also facing controversy when it discontinued its original dry cider in the US in 2014, later bringing it back in 2018. Its global reach spans the UK, Europe, Australia, Canada, and the United States, with regional variations produced in Belgium and Australia.
