Lore & Background

Apatin Brewery was founded in 1756 as the Imperial Brewery owned by the Imperial Chamber, making it one of the oldest breweries in Serbia. In the 18th century, production reached 12,000 hectoliters of beer. The brewery transferred to private ownership for the first time at the end of the 19th century, with major investments aimed at modernizing the brewing process and enlarging production capacities. Before World War I, yearly production was 16,000 hectoliters. The brewery experienced hard times in the 1930s, leading to a disruption of production in 1935. After the liberation of Belgrade in World War II and reparation of old equipment, a new phase began, and by 1950 production exceeded 40,000 hectoliters. Continuous investments from 1958 to 1966 led to reconstruction, modernization, and increased capacity. In the 1970s, automated production lines were introduced, resulting in over 630,000 hectoliters in 1977, along with new non-alcoholic beverages flavored with orange, lemon, blueberry, and Alpine herbs. Economic sanctions in the 1990s caused a brief production decrease to 475,000 hectoliters yearly. The company began transferring to private ownership in 1991, joined the InterBrew network in 2003, became part of InBev in 2005, and then Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2008. In December 2009, it became part of StarBev, a regional brewery group based in Prague. On 3 April 2012, Molson Coors completed its acquisition of StarBev for approximately €2.65 billion, bringing Apatin Brewery under its ownership.
